Europe

Temperate climates mean a shorter operating season than in some other parts of the world, so there is less obvious investment in vessels used for liveaboard operations in Europe. Converted fishing boats are often employed and, although they are very seaworthy, they can be less than entirely stable. It is often the case that the boat makes for safe harbour at nightfall, so that everyone aboard gets a good sleep.

En-suite facilities tend to be unusual rather than the norm but, as passengers tend to dive in drysuits and need fewer showers, no-one seems to mind. The tendency to accommodate those who wish to dive with multiple tanks has encouraged many boat operators to fit hydraulic lifts, rather than expect their passengers to climb a ladder whilst heavily laden after a dive.
